Where to Find Network Contacts

Where to Find Network Contacts Ive been thinking about how and where to find network contacts. The idea is this: imagine you are a professional who recently entered a job search after working for years in your last job.   Maybe you have had a few changes in employer, or divisions that you worked in.   Nonetheless, you havent done any traditional networking. Now you are told you will likely network into your next job.   And you dont know what that means. I remember sitting at a small table with a blank sheet of paper with an old retired guy asking me to list who I knew this would be my network list. My mind was as blank as the paper. So, the question I pose to you WHERE do you find network contacts? Where to Find Network Contacts Ive been thinking about how and where to find network contacts. 7 Things Recruiters Wont Tell You

7 Things Recruiters Won’t Tell You Recruiters might be the ticket to your dream job. They’re well-connected, always trying to fill multiple positions, and they know the “ins” of the industries and top companies you aspire towards. If you’re lucky enough, they may even have a position that you are a fit for. There is no downside to better understanding the nature of their work. Here are 7 things recruiters will never tell you, but that you should know: You could probably negotiate In a lot of cases, a recruiter could have gone higher, had the candidate only negotiated. Many candidates will not be bold enough to do this, but it is generally welcomed and a healthy part of an effective hiring process. Typically, a recruiter would get a salary range for each position and it’s unlikely that their initial offer would be at the top of that range. Do your research, get an idea of what you’re worth on the market, and don’t be afraid to name your price. At the end of the day, the recruiter wants to make the placement. This means they will support you in getting what you want if that’s what it takes to fill the position. They only skim resumes You spend hours adding keywords, triple checking for spelling errors, then importing to Photoshop for finishing touches. But that doesn’t mean the recruiter will spend any more than the usual few seconds skimming your carefully-crafted, perfectly formatted CV. The reality is, there are more resumes to read than they have time for and the majority are usually not a good fit anyway. So unless your qualifications perfectly match the job descriptions, don’t expect a recruiter to spend more than a minute scrutinizing your profile.  They can only influenceâ€"not decide In most cases, the hiring manager (or their boss) calls the shots. The recruiter is simply there to discuss and offer their professional opinion on the candidates. If you can, find out who else is important in the hiring process. Build relationships with those people and know who to direct your thank-yous and follow-up questions to. There is always more than one person to impress.  But they still have A LOT of insider info So don’t be so quick to dismiss them. They know who the hiring managers are, what they’re like, and what they’re looking for. It should still be a top priority to dazzle the recruiter and establish a strong connection with them. After all, they were hired to make that placement.  You may be the Plan B Already on your third follow-up email? If a recruiter or hiring manager seems to be dragging their feet or delaying in giving you a final decision, chances are there is another candidate in the pipeline. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Take it as a challenge to convince the recruiter of your fit for the role.   If you are really interested in the position, it wouldn’t hurt to express your enthusiasm. This alone would put you ahead of an equally qualified candidate. Another possibility could be a delay on the employer’s side. They may put things off, cancel a position, or even ghost their recruiter. It happens. If you have been interviewed and haven’t been given the red light, the best thing to do is to ask the recruiter for an update. They will usually give an honest answer if this is the case. Remember to maintain an upbeat and positive tone in all follow-ups.  They don’t work for you It often comes as a surprise to job-seekers that we work for the companies, not the candidates. While it is the recruiter’s job to place someone, it doesn’t necessarily have to be you. Needless to say, it is on you to do your due diligence, conduct your own research, and find sources that may be less biased (eg. Glassdoor). Look out for your own interest, as the recruiters are human and are being paid to fill the position.  Don’t expect feedback Recruiters are generally not interested in critiquing rejected candidates. Whether that’s due to a lack of interest in telling you that jeans won’t cut it or a fear of negative reaction to honest feedback, it is often more trouble than it’s worth. On the other hand, if you receive feedback from a recruiter, take it as a compliment. It means they really like you and think you have great potential. If you do wish to ask for feedback, the key is to ask a specific question such as “What is the main reason I wasn’t considered as a finalist?” Questions like these are easier to respond to and take the guesswork out of open-ended questions. Recruiters can be the best thing to ever happen to your career. If you are actively job-hunting, know that they are only one part of your career search. They can only help if they have positions that fit you so don’t rely on them too much! If you do end up working with one, do your part by researching ahead of time, giving the recruiter as much as possible to work with, and building strong relationships with the key players. In doing so, you will both be better positioned to find success. This guest post was authored by Henry Goldbeck Henry E. How to Love Your Job Find a job you love and never work a day in your life! But is this easier said than done? If youre one of the lucky people who loves what they do and are pretty good at it too, then youve got a good thing going there. Unfortunately, not everyone finds themselves in a job that they enjoy, however, and this can create problems with engagement and productivity at work. Enjoying your job, not only drives you to achieve your best, but it also improves your happiness in general, so its in both yours and your employers best interest for you to be happy at work. Adecco has taken a look at some of the benefits of a happy workforce and why its essential that your staff enjoy their jobs. Why is it important for employees to enjoy their job? Being happy at work can make you more friendly, less sluggish, more generous and healthier. The happiest workers are in Canada, with 64% claiming to love their job. The least happy workers are in Germany, with only 34% claiming to enjoy their job. How to be more productive: Know your body clock Tackle the more laborious tasks when your energy levels are at their peak and leave the more routine functions for when youre on a slump. Prioritise tasks  Complete tasks in order of importance and the amount of time it will take. Take a break Sometimes you need to give yourself a break to get back in the zone. Take some time for a tea break or a short walk to allow yourself to recharge. How to get along better with your co-workers: Find some common ground If you find yourself clashing with a co-worker try to talk it through with them and find some common ground. Listen to what they have to say and try to find a solution. Its better out in the open. Dont fear conflict If somethings bothering you, assert yourself. There is no need to be afraid of standing your ground if you approach it reasonably and maturely. Learn from others Observe how others deal with co-workers and your boss to learn how you can better handle situations. How to manage your time better:  Stop procrastinating Pin-point what your main distractions are and find a solution to stop wasting time. Dont multi-task  Often multitasking and shifting between jobs can delay you from getting tasks done. Try to focus on one at a time to get things done more efficiently. Will Strong Coffee Help Me in the Interview

Will Strong Coffee Help Me in the Interview Going for a job interview can be nerve-wracking. If you really want to make a good impression, you will need nerves of steel! Of course, you want to make the best impression possible, and there are a number of ways to ensure you create a positive reaction from your interview. Many individuals have their own practices before going to their interviews. Some wear their lucky ties, or socks. Some wake up extra early. Some take a cup of strong coffee. But is taking strong coffee really a good idea when going to your interview? Could coffee do the trick? Admittedly, coffee helps in perking you up. If you had a long, sleepless night, and you want to appear more alert, then this is probably a good idea. The caffeine in coffee has aided individuals in improved mental capacities. Knowing this, you would definitely want to go into your interview with a clear head. It is a good idea to look alert and smart during your interview. If you have the energy to be perky, no matter what time your job interview is, then this will work definitely to your advantage. Take strong coffee, to make a strong impression on your interviewer. It may not always be the best option: However, you have to also be warned that while strong coffee may give you a strong impression, it might not necessarily be a good strong impression. Coffee is known as a diuretic, which means that it has the ability to make you want to urinate a few moments after drinking. For particularly strong coffee, the effect may take place sooner. Do you really want to go into an interview, then squirm uncomfortable halfway through it, that is definitely not a good sign for your potential employer. If you want to avoid this embarrassing situation, it might be best to avoid strong coffee before your interview. For some individuals, coffee causes them to experience heart palpitations. It may increase heart rate, and leave the individual breathless and a little jittery. As the person being interviewed, you do not want to come off as nervous and trembling. This would make you appear as if you are lying to your interviewer, and will ruin your credibility from the get-go. Try to avoid strong coffee if you get these effects upon drinking it. Conclusion: In the end, it is really up to you. If you know that coffee will be effective for you in terms of keeping you alert, then go ahead and drink strong coffee before your interview. However, if you are uncertain about what coffee can do for you, then try to avoid this prior to your interview. Of course, just to be on the safe side, avoid taking anything that you don’t usually take prior to your interview, to avoid any untoward situations. When going into interviews, you should not rely on any particular drink or food to get you going. Just prepare yourself internally and make sure that you have all your requirements ready; and you will definitely nail that interview.

Careers Fight Club is the careers strategy weve been waiting for - Debut

Careers Fight Club is the careers strategy weve been waiting for - Debut Sigh. Working life is  so  complicated. No matter how many books or articles you read about careers (yes, even  ours),  the insights they give are usually  for a wider audience.  As a result, its impossible to find insights tailored specifically to you. Enter the Careers Fight Club. The idea is simple. Round up a group of your most driven, savvy friends. Then, you set up a regular meeting think every fortnight, or monthly. Go into the meeting with a topic agenda, and hash out your goals and obstacles with the people who know you best. Jessica Bennett came up with the concept, speaking about it in her book Feminist Fight Club: An Office Manual For A Sexist Workplace.   There are so many books.  but none of them really spoke to me as a millennial about what I was actually facing, Bennett said. In an interview with Refinery29, she mentioned monthly get-togethers actually inspired her to write her book. Now you can do the same. Here are Debuts top tips on starting your very own Careers Fight Club: Make your group as diverse and varied as possible The more perspectives you have in the group, the more likely it is youll find the solution to your problem. Seeing things from somebody elses point of view might help you approach your obstacle in a different light. So if youre doing marketing, invite an engineer to your Fight Club. Inclusivity, isnt it the best? Whatever is said in the Careers Fight Club stays in the Careers Fight Club These meetings are meant to be a safe space for you to vent, discuss awkward issues and probably complain about their co-workers. Its healthy to have a place to talk about your gripes, not so healthy if youre feeling anxious about your secrets getting out. Keep it on the down low, and be understanding about peoples sensitive information. Set an agenda beforehand Its easy to go off on tangents when youre chatting with your mates. Aim to come to the meeting with at least two or three questions, so youre more likely to have a productive discussion. It doesnt have to stop with your real-life meetings Make a Whatsapp group! Become an admin of a Facebook one, or, if youre feeling really advanced, start a community on Slack. Its always nice to have easy access to your favourite careers advisers just make sure to be respectful of peoples work hours. Follow-up with the action points The good thing about doing things as a group is that you can hold each other accountable. Ask each other about your respective progress, and support one another through difficult problems. Often, anxiety gets in the way of putting something into action, so this is a good way to curb any issue-avoiding. Dont be afraid of the uncomfortable stuff Now is the best time to bring up stuff you were too afraid to ask. If you ever wondered if it was appropriate to ask your boss for a promotion, this is your chance. No issue is too big or too small Honestly, if someone wanted to talk about small things like how to get their co-worker to stop eating smelly crisps, let them do it. Inversely, you could go so far as to have a large discussion about discrimination at work. Your Fight Club can do anything. Let us know if you start one by tweeting us @DebutCareers!
